Friedrichshafen, Germany, (April 22, 2026) — Continental Aerospace Technologies™ is thrilled to announce that its CD-170R Jet-A piston engine for rotorcraft applications has received certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Adding to Continental’s extensive portfolio, the CD-170R represents a new product segment, bringing an efficient Jet-A piston engine solution to the general aviation market. This milestone marks Continental’s first certified Jet-A FADEC-controlled helicopter piston engine, adding to the company’s 120-year legacy.
The CD-170R is an evolution of the highly regarded CD-170 engine. With 170 horsepower, this turbocharged Diesel piston engine delivers exceptional fuel efficiency, reliability, and ease of engine management. The CD-170R consumes approximately 7.9 gallons of Jet-A1 per hour during cruise and features a 1200-hour Time Between Replacement (TBR), with potential for extension over time. Utilizing the helicopter’s transmission gearbox allowed for the elimination of the engine-integrated gearbox, reducing the engine’s weight by 37 pounds from its standard version. This resulted in an enhanced power-to-weight ratio and therefore improving rotorcraft performance. Additionally, the Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system simplifies engine management, allowing pilots to focus on controlling the aircraft during all phases of flight. These key attributes make the CD-170R an ideal choice for helicopter applications.
“The EASA certification of the CD-170R is a proud moment for us as we continue to push the boundaries of aviation technology,” said Dr. David Dörner, Vice President of Global Research and Development at Continental®. “As we celebrate our 120th anniversary, this achievement reflects our commitment to delivering innovative solutions that power legacies forward. The CD-170R offers exceptional performance with its unique rotorcraft-specific features, and we are excited to collaborate with future industry partners to introduce this powerful engine to the rotorcraft market.”
With the EASA certification of the CD-170R, Continental® will play a key role in the next generation of rotorcraft engines. This achievement not only expands the company’s portfolio of advanced piston engines but also reinforces its long-standing reputation for innovation and reliability in the aviation industry. As Continental® looks to the future, it remains dedicated to providing cutting-edge solutions that meet the evolving needs of pilots and operators worldwide, ensuring the continued success of the rotorcraft market.
